The Picky Bookworm

"Books are a uniquely portable magic." –Stephen King

Ok, so quarantine hasn’t been the easiest, but I have been able to add to my book collection, thanks to stimulus checks…

Below is a list of all the books I’ve been able to buy, and what made me choose them! Some of these books I did get for free, but I still think they count!

The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare

I’ve read these books before, but never got to own them. I’m so excited to own the entire series, so I can read them over and over at my leisure!

The Crimson Shamrock by Michael Hughes

This book was recommended to me by the author, because I read a book similar to it a couple months back. I’m looking forward to digging in. I hope it’s good!

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

I got this book from the library a few months back, because I loved the cover. It’s so beautiful! Then I read it, and fell EVEN MORE in love with it! It’s such an empowering take on the Beauty & The Beast story! I couldn’t put it down! I’m so blessed to own it now!

The Gods of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs

This is one of the books in The Mars Chronicles. You might remember a movie from a couple years ago, named John Carter? This movie was based on The Princess of Mars, and is one of the books in the series. I’m not sure which one this book is in the series, but I’m looking forward to reading it!

A Heart So Fierce and Broken by Brigid Kemmerer

This is the second book, following A Curse so Dark & Lonely, and I just bought this today, so haven’t read it yet. I’m probably going to read the first one, then this one.

Heartbeat by Danielle Steele

I read this book a long time ago, and loved it so much! The main character is married to a controlling man, who tells her he doesn’t want kids. When she accidentally becomes pregnant, she has to fight to keep her marriage together, even when she wants to keep the baby, and her husband wants her to abort.

Inconvenient Daughter by Lauren Sharkey

I received this book for free from NetGalley, and while I didn’t love it as much as I expected, I didn’t hate it either. Like I stated in my review, this book is worth reading once, but the story is a little stunted. The main character Rowan, though, is a very well-written, complex character. The author did state she would be willing to consider writing another story using Rowan as the main character. I am looking forward to that very much!

Journey by Danielle Steele

This is my other favorite book by Danielle Steele. Most of the time I find Ms. Steele’s books repetitive, but the two books I have listed here are my favorites, and ones I would read more than once. The main character in this book is married to a controlling, verbally abusive man, and has to make her way even when she believes that she’s not worth it sometimes.

Lead Like a Woman by Deborah Smith Pegues

This is a self-help book I received for free from NetGalley. I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! Ms. Smith-Pegues is such an engaging writer, and she’s so knowledgeable about her subject matter. This book is well worth reading!

The Lying Game by Ruth Ware

I listened to the audio book a while back, and loved it so much I need the actual book! I haven’t completely finished it yet, but I’m looking forward to finishing it!

The Martian by Andy Weir

This was a movie starring Matt Damon, and since I loved the movie, I hope I feel the same about the book. You will likely find this in a “Books vs. Movies” post soon!

Million Dollar Habits by Stellan Moreira

This is another self-help book I found, because while I’m loving working on my blog, it hasn’t reached “business” status yet, and I want to help build my habits, so I can make this blog a viable business.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

I kept seeing this book on Bookstagram, and thought the premise sounded really interesting! I haven’t read it yet, but I’m really looking forward to it!

One by Jewell E. Ann

This author posted on Instagram that she was giving away two of her books for the quarantine, and since I can’t resist a free book, I snagged a copy! I read Scarlet Stone (see below), but haven’t cracked this one yet!

Scarlet Stone by Jewell E. Ann

I LOVED THIS BOOK! The main character, Scarlet, travels to Louisiana to “retire” from being a thief. She ends up renting a room in a house where another man rents the other room. They DON’T get along at first. This is a typical “enemies to lovers” trope, but it was written so well, and has twists and turns I didn’t see coming!

The Sleepover by Samantha King

This is a book I received for free from NetGalley, and I rather enjoyed it. The main character, Izzy, finds her son missing after attending a friend’s sleepover. The rest of the book is full of twists and turns, and I will likely read it again, even knowing what happens.

Thr3e by Ted Dekker

I love Ted Dekker. He’s an amazing author, who also wrote my favorite series of all time, “The Circle Series.” If you haven’t read any of his books, I say start with either of these. You won’t be sorry!

War of The Wives by Tamar Cohen

I found this book on my local library’s app, and enjoyed the first part so much I decided to suck it up and buy a copy. Still haven’t finished it, but it’s on my list!

Who Are You?

I couldn’t finish this book, because I don’t feel like it had been completely edited before being sent to NetGalley. I’m hoping I can find a copy later that is a little more complete, because the premise sounded intriguing!

Have you bought new books during quarantine? Which ones? I’d love to get some recommendations! Let me know below! Don’t forget to subscribe, too, so you never miss an update!

Until next time, bookworms!

    1. Most of it was kindle books, but yeah…I love getting new books! The Lying game is actually really good. I recommend listening to the audiobook, though. The lady that reads it is amazing!
