Casey Lawrence

Welcome back my friends! I’m thrilled to bring you another episode of The Picky Bookworm Podcast! Casey Lawrence is on the show today, and we had such a fun chat! I love meeting new people, and Casey is no exception. I look forward to building a bigger friendship as we continue down this road called life. Casey was such a blast to talk to, and I’m sure if we were given half a chance, we could have talked for hours longer.

All About Casey

Casey Lawrence is completing a doctorate in English Literature at Trinity College Dublin on gender inversion and other queer themes in the novels of James Joyce and his contemporaries. She is a queer activist, feminist, and democratic socialist who writes contemporary fiction, sci-fi, and fantasy, as well as academic articles, educational materials, and book reviews. Casey also moonlights as an editor and proofreader-for-hire and convenes a bi-weekly Finnegans Wake reading group on Zoom.

In her free time, Casey enjoys playing Dungeons and Dragons and consuming stories at an alarming rate. Originally from southern Ontario, she currently lives in Denmark with her partner of six years. In high school, she was vice president of the Gay-Straight Alliance as a “straight ally”; she later discovered her bisexuality and became an even more vocal advocate for comprehensive and inclusive sex education in schools. She writes the books she wishes she’d been able to read growing up.

Notes From Today’s Episode

I loved chatting with Casey about representation in books, and how important it is for readers to be able to see themselves in books and other forms of media. It can be frustrating to miss out on authentic representation, when people are all different anyway, and we all have different experiences in life. We agreed that indie authors are wonderful at adding this type of representation, because they are writing stories they would want to read.

Casey told me that one of the best parts about the indie community is how supportive we all are of each other. I have to agree. Despite our living all over the world, we often feel more like a family, and that’s a wonderful thing.

I hope you’ll join me in checking out Casey’s book, Out of Order, which is up for pre-order right now. Just click the link below.

Casey recommended a book to our listeners, called Ghosts of Guatemala. As soon as I heard/saw the title, I knew I had to read it. I love pretty much anything relating to Guatemala, and I’m just a smidge obsessed. Look for a review of this book as soon as I can get it to you.

I want to Pre-order Out of Order by Casey Lawrence!
