I’m a mood reader. I’m pretty sure that’s obvious, but I don’t read books in the order I receive them. When I finally got around to reading this book, though, I kicked myself for not reading it sooner. It was so good! I received this book from Netgalley, in return for an honest review.

Synopsis
Elise Carmichael lives in Little Rock, Arkansas, as a sign interpreter for the court system. Her husband has died, leaving her in charge of her 7 year old son, Sawyer, who is deaf. When she reads the lips of a security guard as the courthouse, talking about the murder of her mother in law, Elise is determined to do something.
But then she receives a call that changes everything. Her son has broken his arm, and her focus shifts from what she just saw, to her son. By the time she remembers what happened, her mother in law has been murdered.
At first, Elise is a witness, but as things escalate, she starts receiving threats at her home. Elise is then forced to protect her son with everything she has, and at the same time, help discover what has happened to the senator.

“Stop worrying. Lilliana York will be taken care of tonight. Permanently. Just as you instructed.”
Elise Carmichael froze in her path across the polished lobby floor of the Arkansas Federal Courthouse. Had she read the security guard’s lips correctly? She turned to get a better look at his mouth. He stood off in the corner almost, his back facing the wall of glass, out of reach of the security camera that faced the front entrance. The storm clouds over Little Rock had intensified, making the early April afternoon even darker.
“You just make sure the money’s ready to be wired as soon as it’s done.”
The guard shoved the cell phone into his back pants pocket, nodded at the man who stood adjacent to him, then moved to join the other guards at the entrance by the metal detector. She recognized him as belonging, but didn’t know his name. The other man, she didn’t recognize at all.
This had to be some kind of joke. Surely this couldn’t be real. Senator Lilliana York was very prominent and formidable. And yes, aggressive. Elise should know since Lilliana was her mother-in-law.
My Thoughts
I’m a mood reader. I don’t read books in the order that I get them. I probably should, but I don’t. When I finally got around to reading this book, I kicked myself for not reading it earlier. It was so good! The only complaint I really have, which isn’t actually a complaint, is that I’m not used to reading a book that uses my own southern lingo in its regular writing. It wasn’t a bad thing, just a tad distracting.
I read this book in about 2 days. It moved along quickly, and had good main character development, along with excellent supporting characters. In the midst of all the madness, Elise was able to build a support network that helped her through the tough times, and celebrated with her in the good.
Most political thrillers take place in Washington, or in a supreme court somewhere, or something like that. To have a book set in Arkansas was refreshing. The setting was small: mainly Elise’s house, but it was described in a way that I could imagine it well, and see myself living there. I like that.
I couldn’t see what was going to happen, which is another good thing. I didn’t see a ton of twists and turns in the story, but it moved along well enough that too many would have made the story too convoluted.
Recommendation
I really enjoyed this book and was able to finish it fairly quickly. Political books get to be too much for me sometimes, so it was nice to find one I was able to enjoy. If you like books about conspiracy, and murder mysteries, then you will like this book. If you like political books that are outside the norm, you’ll enjoy this book.
Conclusion
I may be a mood reader, but I still kicked myself when I finally got around to reading this book. I wish I had started it sooner. I was able to read it quickly, because the story moves along well, with good character development. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. Please let me know in the comments what you thought!
