The Brilliant Death by Amy Capetta

Many of you know I’m a sucker for a dollar store bargain. I especially like finding books at the dollar tree. My reasoning? If the book is awesome, then I only paid a dollar. If the book sucks, I only paid a dollar. Either way, I come out a winner. Luckily, The Brilliant Death by Amy Capetta was in the first column. This book was amazing! My friend Rowan and I discussed this on my podcast last year, and I promised him a review. Sorry it took so long!

Teodora is the youngest daughter in a family that is always run by a man. Her younger brother is set to inherit, when he is called to meet the Capo. The Capo is the new ruler of the country, and Teodora doesn’t trust him. She’s spent her entire life learning to control magic, and turning her father’s enemies into trinkets. No one knows she has magic, so when her brother is suddenly unable to travel to meet the Capo, Teodora has found the perfect outlet: She will become her brother, and take his place at the palace.

The Brilliant Death by Amy Capetta is such a fun read! I read it last year (I know, I’m way behind on reviews), and finished it in just a couple days. I don’t usually read hard copies of books, but as I said above, I love finding gems at the dollar store.

My favorite part of The Brilliant Death was Teodora. Her magic was awesome. While I wouldn’t change humans into trinkets if I had her magical ability, the fact that it is possible in the book is pretty amazing. Teodora’s loyalty to her family is also incredible. She will do anything to protect them, even turn herself into a boy, when her culture considers males to be better than female.

I can’t really say too much about this book without spoilers, but I will say if you enjoy non-binary characters, and diversity in your books, you’ll enjoy The Brilliant Death by Amy Capetta. Amy’s characters are relatable, and you’ll enjoy reading about Teodora’s adventures. Even when she feels like she has to hide her identity, I could feel her strength, and commitment to doing what is right for her family.
