Unexpected Enemy by Tim Cagle [Book Review]

Y’all, I seriously loved this book so much! Unexpected Enemy is a legal thriller along the same lines as books I’ve read by John Grisham.

Thanks so much to the author, Tim Cagle, for giving me a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Ann Sorenson and her husband Stephen have been trying to get pregnant for over 2 years. Ann has finally been able to get pregnant through IVF, but when she gives birth, the baby’s mocha skin doesn’t match her own porcelain. This discovery, coupled with the fact that tests have revealed the sperm donor has given both baby and mother HIV, send Ann and Stephen on a journey to discover what happened and why.

The Writing

The way Tim Cagle wrote this book was amazing. He revealed just enough at critical junctures to keep readers on the edge of their seats. It definitely worked with me! I think I read this book in about 2 days total, because I just HAD to know what was going to happen! This story had so many twists and turns that at one point I’m pretty sure I was staring at my own back I was so turned around.

Characters

I felt for Ann so much during this story. She had been through so much! Despite the fact that her baby was a different color from her, she gave birth to him, so she was his mother. Ann wanted to keep him, of course, and get him the justice he deserved.

The two main lawyers, Erica and David, are so amazing at fighting for their clients. David, in particular, even though he works for the plaintiff in the lawsuit, is extremely honest. He is more than willing to settle the case for millions, as long as he can prove liability. Erica is a bulldog in working to make sure Ann and her family receive justice.

If you love the John Grisham legal thrillers, you will likely really enjoy this book too. The two authors have the same style of not giving away everything at once, and they are both really good at leaving the reader wanting more. I fully intend to hunt down this author’s other books, and check them out too. If this book is any indication of the author’s ability, I need to read his other works.
